Joining a local group is a great way to develop skills, stay motivated and meet new people. Opportunities abound for any riding level and interest; long distance road riding, slow and casual, trail riding, advocacy and volunteer engagement – peruse the dozens of options below. 

Local Clubs

  • The Almaden Cycle Touring Club (ACTC) promotes cycling on the trails, roads, paths, and mountains of the South Bay area of San Francisco and beyond. Founded in 1975, ACTC is a volunteer-based non-profit organization which emphasizes the social, recreational, transportation, and health aspects of cycling through education, club rides, philanthropy, and meetings of members of all ages and levels. ACTC’s motto is “Riding for Fitness, Friendship, and Fun.” ACTC offers an average of over 150 rides per month, with rides for all levels and interests.

  • The Alto Velo Racing Club is one of America’s top amateur cycling clubs. Founded in 1992 and based in Silicon Valley, Alto Velo supports and encourages bike racing across all categories and is the home of the LuxVue-SunPower Racing Team. This club is a member of USA Cycling, the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States. Club members have earned district and national championships in each year of the club’s existence.

  • Coastside on Bikes is a group of bike enthusiasts who support bike access for all San Mateo County Coastside community members. From pavement to parks, we are dedicated to preserving and expanding bike access and connectivity on the Coastside. We engage in education, advocacy, and coalition-building with other local groups in order to urge agencies at the city and county levels to provide better trails and safer routes to work and school.

  • The Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club (FFBC) is a non-profit club organized for the purpose of promoting all facets of bicycling including leisure, recreational, touring, and racing, always with an emphasis on bicycle safety and education.

    Formed in 1972, FFBC is a member of numerous local, state and national bicycle organizations that promote and protect the rights and welfare of all cyclists. These organizations include Bike East Bay (formerly East Bay Bicycle Coalition), Bay Area Bicycle Coalition (BABC), California Bicycle Coalition (CBC), California Association of Bicycle Organizations (CABO), and USA Cycling.

  • The Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club (LGBRC) is a highly competitive amateur cycling team founded by 1960 Rome Olympic team members, Bob Tetzlaff and Jack Hartman, as a developmental racing and training club. Its focus is road and track racing and their MTB/Cyclocross Team. LGBRC offers training rides and a youth development program. This club is a member of USA Cycling, the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States.

  • Founded in 1962 by Lockheed employees, today’s Pedalera hosts the Mount Hamilton Challenge. Held in April, riders start in Santa Clara, climb to Lick Observatory atop 4,209 foot Mt. Hamilton, then continue through the remote San Antonio and Arroyo Mocho Valleys.

  • Started in 1939, the SJBC’s focus is road and track racing with clinics and training opportunities for beginners and all levels. This club is a member of USA Cycling, the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States.

  • Since 2009, San Jose Mountain Biking has been dedicated to get people riding more often, whenever and wherever possible. SJMB is made up of people from all walks of life, from all over the San Francisco Bay Area, with organizers representing the South Bay, East Bay, Peninsula, Santa Cruz, and even the Central Valley.

  • Santa Clara University’s Cycling club is an on-campus student group. The club includes a competitive racing team as well as a more recreational mountain biking group. The racing team competes in the NCCA (National Collegiate Cycling Association) against prominent teams in many Northern California races.   • Since 2003 Dominick Guida, of the Cruiser Shop, and Behind Bars, Inc. have held one of Northern California’s largest bicycle shows and festivals. Shiny Side Up is held annually at San Jose’s History Park on the last Sunday in July, the focus is custom, cruiser, lowrider, and art bicycles.

  • Organized in 1982 as Responsible Organized Mountain Pedalers (ROMP), SVMTB promotes mountain bike recreation and works to maintain and improve sustainable trail access in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. SVMTB is a regional chapter of the International Mountain Biking Association and was among the first bicycling organizations to advocate for responsible access to County trails.

  • Founded in 1972, Skyline Bicycle Club is a social and recreational bicycle club in the South Bay Area. SBC hosts road rides 4 days a week year round and Wednesday Night Rides from April-September. In addition to road bicycle rides, SBC offers hikes, ski trips, winter movie nights, pizza parties, summer barbeques, the annual fall “Munch-a-Long” progressive dinner, a Holiday Party/gift swap, and other outings.   • Stanford Cycling Team (SCT) promotes cycling, in all its forms, in our community. Members ride together near Stanford and throughout the Bay Area and California and beyond. “Our rides are open to anyone with a helmet!” SCT races road, mountain, and track in the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference and competes regularly at USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals. SCT works to improve cycling in its community by teaching elementary school students safety skills, by participating in safety events on campus, and by advocating for better cycling infrastructure throughout the region.

  • Founded in 1986, Sunnyvale Cupertino Cycling Club (SCCC) is dedicated to the promotion of cycling for recreation, events (centuries, double centuries, Death Ride, and more) and racing. “We are, open to riders of all ages and abilities. Our members ride road, mountain, track, and cross! This is a club that prides itself on what it gives BACK to cycling. No riders are left behind on club rides. This is NOT a club with an attitude.

    SCCC hosts two weekly rides:

    Los Altos and Cupertino, CA: Sunnyvale Cupertino Cycling Club (SCCC) Saturday Ride 8:30 am. Ride start location alternates between the 76 Gas Station at Rancho Shopping Center on Foothill Expressway near Springer/Magdelena in Los Altos or Cupertino Bike Shop, 10625 S. Friendly, no-drop, men and women’s club ride is a moderate to fast paced ride with re-grouping. 40-60 miles with 4000-6000 feet of climbing.     Los Altos and Palo Alto, CA: Sunnyvale Cupertino Cycling Club (SCCC) Pink Ladies Saturday Ride 9:30 am. Rides start at the Rancho Shopping Center Starbucks on Foothill Expressway at Springer/Magdelena in Los Altos then roll onto Gunn High School to meet additional riders at 9:45under the school sign at Arastradero Road and Foothill Expressway in Palo Alto. A friendly social to moderate paced weekly club ride with no-drop, typically with 20-40 miles and 1000-4000 feet of climbing depending upon the season. Men and women are all welcome.   • Velo Girls was founded in March, 2002 and is a place where women and girls can share their love for cycling in a safe, friendly, encouraging environment. The club focuses on fun, recreational riding, with the opportunity to attend cycling skills and general fitness clinics to improve riding and overall fitness. There are scheduled rides for all level of riders from beginners, recreational riders, and racers. This club offers rides and events every day of the year, including road rides for all levels, mountain bike trail rides, cyclocross training, and lots of fun!

  • Founded in 1968 and based in Palo Alto, Western Wheelers host recreational rides virtually every day of the week on the Peninsula, in the South Bay, and occasionally farther afield.   • Bay Area Bike Share is a bike sharing system with a fleet of 700 bikes locked into a network of 70 stations in San Francisco, Redwood City, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and San Jose. Intended to provide Bay Area residents and visitors with an additional transportation option for getting around the region, Bay Area Bike Share is fun, easy, and affordable. Bay Area bikes can be rented from and returned to any station in the system, creating an efficient network with many possible combinations of start and end points.   • Built in 1963, and operated by the Northern California Velodrome Association in strong partnership with Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department, Hellyer County Velodrome is committed to developing athletes by making training and racing opportunities affordable for cyclists, families, and the community at large. Hellyer has hosted National cycling events including the 1972 US Olympic Bicycling Trials, Madison Race National Championships, and Masters and Juniors championships. The NCBA is a member of USA Cycling, the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States.

    Funds from training sessions, donations, and bicycle rentals are used for the upkeep, maintenance, and improvement of the velodrome. Spectating at the velodrome is free. Juniors (under 18) can ride the track for free, along with free use of the fixed gear rental bikes. Adults typically pay as little as $5 for training and $5 for bike rentals for most beginner events.

  • With a cruiser and custom bicycle focus, the Kruz3r Mob is a group of bicyclists who love to ride. Beginning with family rides in 2009, the Kruz3r Mob now participates in local public service events, bike shows, fundraising for charities, and rides all over the Bay Area and beyond.

  • Community Cycles of California (CCofCA) is a non-profit social enterprise serving low income families, homeless individuals, veterans and other disadvantaged populations. Our bicycle shops and service centers create the revenue to support our programs for these communities. CCofCA refurbishes donated bicycles, saving them from landfill, and puts them back on the road. Our bicycles are safe, reliable, and quality certified; more than 60 inspections and safety checks are completed on each bicycle we refurbish.

  • Since 2005, San Jose Bike Party volunteers have organized a ride held on the third Friday of each month at 8:00pm. The starting location, route, and theme are different each month and are posted on their website on the day of the ride. Its mission is, “Building community through bicycling” and is a place to ride bikes, make friends, and have a good time.   • Since 2003, TWFKs has worked diligently to collect funds, purchase and assemble bikes and distribute them to worthy, established children’s charities year round. Known for their annual holiday “Bike Build” event at San Jose Convention Center’s South Hall, TWFKs provides thousands of children each year with brand new, sparkly bikes to encourage lifelong habits of exercise and outdoor activity.
