Announcing Comprehensive Bike Education Programming for San Mateo County

This investment into healthier and more just communities leverages Measure A and Measure W sales tax funds, brought to you by San Mateo County Transit Authority (TA), City/County Association of Governments (C/CAG), and Commute.org.

The first class is online on February 22nd: Winter Biking - sign up here!

Need to know:

SVBC, as the education provider, will schedule and offer classes to communities across San Mateo County. Our experienced instructors are eager to make bike riding for transportation an option to many more of our community members.

  • All classes will be posted on SVBC’s Education webpage: www.BikeSiliconValley.org/Learn

  • The most thorough on-bike class offered is the two-part League of American Bicyclist “Smart Cycling” Curriculum:

    • 3-hour online Smart Cycling Part 1, followed by

    • 6-hour on-bike Smart Cycling Part 2

  • We will also offer on-bike Learn-To-Ride classes

  • Online classes include a variety of 1-hour webinars open to all residents such as Biking Basics, Bike Theft Prevention and Security, and Winter Biking

We see riding for transportation as a way to address many common problems our community members face. Reasons to sign up for classes and ride more are listed below!

How you can get involved:

  • Be an early adopter: Play a leadership role in this effort by attending a class to increase your understanding of the benefits of biking for everyday transportation. Our first class is Winter Biking - online, 1 hour, on Saturday, February 22nd.

  • View our promo packet and help us invite everyone: Community-based organizations, government agencies, local partners, and community members can all help promote the classes by sharing our flyers digitally and in print! We’ve included a newsletter blurb, social media caption, and three dimensions of the flyer to help you get the word out effortlessly.

  • Refer teaching credential candidates: Know someone who would make a great bike instructor? SVBC is recruiting candidates for a 3-day bike education certification seminar. Successful candidates are eligible for paid instructor positions with SVBC and many other organizations, with wages starting around $62/hour.

  • Help us choose locations: Site selection for on-bike classes is underway. We welcome your ideas of wide-open blacktop areas to teach bike handling skills. Classes will be hosted in areas accessible to members of Equity Priority Communities as defined by TA and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).

We’re excited to get started on these classes - thank you for your interest and please keep in touch!
