500 pounds lighter - SVBC “Beautifies the Bike Path” on the Stevens Creek Trail
Creek Cleanups by bike are a fun, impactful experience for service-minded local riders.
The following post details the January 25th Wheels & Waterways ride, a partnership between SVBC and Grassroots Ecology.
The series is funded by Valley Water’s Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Program, and uses bike rides and trash cleanup events to showcase water infrastructure in Santa Clara County to people in the bike community.
Riders from Los Altos Hill, Sunnyvale, San Jose, Mountain View, and beyond quickly sold out SVBC’s 6th Creek Cleanup by Bike! For this event, we partnered up with local environmental stewardship nonprofit: Grassroots Ecology.
The group’s first stop was Red Rock Coffee, a favorite Mountain View meetup point thanks to its transit accessibility and proximity to many destinations. Riders were taken through a thorough Bike Safety Check.
Always cover the A-B-C Quick Check of making sure your bike is ride-ready: A-B-C stands for Air, Brakes, and Chain.
Safety checks complete, riders departed In groups of five to our meetup point. We parked all the bikes and grabbed gloves, bags, and trash pickers at the La Avenida Trailhead.
We warmed up with small litter like wrappers, fabrics, cans and bottles, eventually adding an awning, a sofa, and a shopping cart to our pile!
Over about 2.5 hours, 25 event attendees pulled and disposed of approximately 500 lbs of litter and waste out of Stevens Creek. Great work everyone, and thank you to all our attendees!
Do you want to ride, too? We won’t even make you bring a litter stick! Be sure to sign up today for our upcoming Rides to Explore Penitencia Creek Trail in San José: March 15, March 29, April 12, and 26.
