El Camino Real Infrastructure Ride Recap from past to future

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition with the support of Silicon Valley Community Foundation organizes a series of city-led, in-person and virtual bike rides for city leaders and staff to learn about how to install great bike infrastructure.  We organized this ride along with the Grand Boulevard Initiative team.

Our latest ride was an exciting virtual tour of plans by the cities of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Colma and Burlingame to transform El Camino Real from its car-centric past into a people-centric destination.

It was an encouraging tour. Over 60 council members, city staff and members of the public participated. The cities shared plans to transform El Camino Real from its state highway roots into the safe and multimodal destinations and travelways many people desire. Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition members have been long term and vocal advocates for this transformation. El Camino Real is among the most dangerous streets in almost every city along it.  Transforming El Camino Real will be a giant step forward toward achieving our goal of 10% of local trips by bicycle. The hopes inspired by the Grand Boulevard Initiative created over a decade ago are starting to take shape.
