Action Alert: Menlo Park Oak Grove Bike Boulevard
Source: City of Menlo ParkThe Menlo Park Oak Grove bike pilot project is in danger of being delayed after a Council meeting in late March in which people complained about the loss of parking to create buffered bike lanes. Now instead of moving forward with construction for the pilot project before the start of the next school year, it could be moved back to later in the fall after further community outreach and modifications. Council will be considering this on April 18 (Item J2 on the agenda). The staff report details the different options for construction and evaluation. We are supporting Option 2, which would keep the project on schedule. See our letter urging the Council to move forward. If you would like to see this project move forward ASAP, please do one or both of the following:
- Attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 18 at 7 pm and tell Council why this project should move forward. (Note: the first item on the agenda after the consent calendar has the potential to last 1-3 hours. You can Stream the City Council meeting live at home and come when it's time for the Oak Grove Bike Pilot. Meetings can be watched at http://www.menlopark.org/694/Watch-public-meetings)
- If you cannot attend the meeting, write City Council at city.council@menlopark.org and copy emma@bikesiliconvalley.org. Include your name, whether you live or work in Menlo Park, and how this route would benefit you or your kids.
Menlo Park city staff and the Bike Commission studied this project and did community outreach last year and the Council approved it at the end of December. The project is not perfect but it is a pilot and can be adjusted after the community experiences the impacts. The city deserves to have a safe and comfortable east-west bike route, particularly for students..
