Dumbarton Corridor Studies Roll On
As we shared in February, there is a new phase of the Dumbarton Corridor studies, which will soon have additional public outreach opportunities to share your view.In 2017, SVBC worked to ensure bicycle facilities on the Dumbarton Corridor were an option in Samtrans’ Dumbarton Corridor Study and advocated for high quality bicycle connections to the trail and the bridges.In 2019, SVBC is working with other local non-profits as part of the Dumbarton Corridor Coalition to inform the next phase of this project. SamTrans has signed an exclusive negotiating agreement with Facebook and Plenary Group, as CrossBay Transit Partners (CBTP), to lead environmental, technical, and financial feasibility studies over the next 18 months. SVBC will continue to work to see dedicated places for people to bike safely on the corridor alongside transit as well as ensure that the project benefits the community.In early June, SVBC was invited to an initial Stakeholder Advisory Group meeting by CBTP. CBTP is also convening a Technical Advisory Meeting and a Regulatory Committee, and they are meeting with elected officials. The SamTrans Board has an ad-hoc committee that is also focused on this process.You can view the presentation that was shared on CBTP’s website. The slides include updates from the team of consultants on outreach, transportation, engineering, and environmental considerations.Some highlights:
A multiuse trail is now in the conceptual design: see slides 19 & 20 for segments and cross sections that show variations of a bike path on Edison Way as well as along the track alignment. Slide 21 also includes a potential bike/ped path along the rail bridge.
Buses are not being considered in the conceptual design: CBTP heard from the community that buses were not desired on this corridor. This process is considering only one mass transit mode on the corridor.
Bike facilities: The consultants are also looking at how to get people walking and biking to station areas as well as across street grade crossings.
Transit stops: The initial transit stops being considered are Downtown Redwood City, Willow Road in Menlo Park, and Newark. They are also considering Marsh Road and how to get to Union City and Fremont. We’ve asked them to consider Middlefield Road in North Fair Oaks as well.
The environmental impact report (EIR) scoping will launch sometime this month or next. The preliminary timeline, if things go according to plan is:
